The Spice Island Experience

Zanzibar earned the name 'Spice Island' through centuries of dominance in the global clove trade. At its peak in the 19th century, Zanzibar produced 90% of the world's cloves. Today, working spice plantations remain throughout the island's interior, offering a sensory journey that is simultaneously educational and deeply pleasurable.

On the Plantation

Your guide will walk you through a working farm where you will hand-pick cloves from towering trees, peel fresh cinnamon bark directly from the trunk, split open a nutmeg fruit to reveal the mace lining, taste fresh vanilla pods, and smell cardamom, turmeric, black pepper, and lemongrass in their natural state. Many of these plants also have medicinal applications in traditional Swahili practice, which your guide will explain.

Stone Town: A World in an Alley

Stone Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site built primarily in the 19th century under the Omani Sultanate. More than 500 ornately carved wooden doors survive — each one reflecting the status and origin of its merchant owner through its design (Indian-style with studs signifying wealth; Arab-style with fluted columns). The tour includes the former slave market, now the site of Christ Church Cathedral, where a powerful monument marks the place where thousands were held before being traded.
