Tanzania Travel Essentials 2025: Visa, Vaccines, Tipping & Connectivity

Everything you need to know before you board the plane: 2025 visa requirements, health protocols, tipping standards, and how to stay connected across the Serengeti.

Visa Requirements (2025)

Most nationalities — including UK, EU member states, and Australia — require a USD 50 e-visa, which can be obtained online at the official Tanzania e-visa portal before departure. US citizens are subject to a mandatory USD 100 multiple-entry visa. Visas can be arranged on arrival, but online pre-approval avoids queues at busy airports.

Zanzibar-specific: As of late 2024, all visitors to Zanzibar must purchase mandatory ZIC (Zanzibar Insurance Corporation) insurance at USD 44 per person on arrival, regardless of any personal travel insurance already held. This is separate from the Tanzania mainland visa.

Health Requirements

Yellow Fever: Vaccination is mandatory if travelling from a Yellow Fever endemic country. This includes any transit of 12+ hours in an endemic country. Carry your International Certificate of Vaccination (the yellow booklet) as it may be checked on entry to Tanzania or Zanzibar.

Malaria: Tanzania (including Zanzibar) is a malaria-endemic country. Prophylactic medication is strongly recommended for all safari regions. Consult your doctor 4–6 weeks before departure. Common options include Malarone (Atovaquone-Proguanil) and Doxycycline. In addition to medication, use DEET-based insect repellent and wear long sleeves after dusk.

Other Recommended Vaccinations: Hepatitis A and B, Typhoid, Tetanus, and Rabies (for extended rural travel). Consult a travel medicine specialist for a personalised protocol.

Tipping Guidelines 2025

Tipping is customary in Tanzania and makes a significant difference to the income of guides, porters, and camp staff. The following standards are widely accepted:

Safari Guide: USD 20–30 per day (per vehicle group) | Safari Cook: USD 10–15 per day (per group) | Lodge/Camp Staff: USD 10–20 per day (per guest, paid into a communal box) | Luggage Porter: USD 1–2 per bag | Kilimanjaro Guide: USD 20–25 per day (individual guide) | Kilimanjaro Porter: USD 10–15 per day | Waiter at city restaurant: 10–15% of bill

Tip at the end of your safari or trek rather than daily, unless you have a specific reason to tip earlier. In US dollars or Tanzanian shillings — both are widely accepted.

Currency and Payments

The Tanzanian Shilling (TZS) is the official currency. USD is widely accepted for hotel bills, tours, and park fees — but carry small denominations (USD 1, 5, 10, 20 bills) as change is often limited. ATMs are available in Arusha, Dar es Salaam, and Zanzibar Town — less reliable in more remote areas. Inform your bank of your travel dates before departure.

Staying Connected: Tanzania's Mobile Network 2025

Tanzania's mobile market reached 106.9 million subscribers in 2025. Vodacom is the market leader (32.1% share), followed by Yas (Tigo) and Airtel. 5G coverage is now available to 30% of the population, concentrated in Dar es Salaam, Arusha, and Zanzibar. Average download speed in early 2026 was 34.19 Mbps — adequate for video calling and navigation.

For tourists, a local SIM card (available at the airport and in town centres for USD 5–10, loaded with data) is the most cost-effective option. Alternatively, digital eSIMs such as SimCorner offer 3GB/day of 5G/4G data for approximately USD 35–40 for 10 days, switching automatically between Airtel and Vodacom for maximum coverage.

Important: Network coverage in national parks and on Kilimanjaro above the forest zone is limited or absent. Download offline maps (Google Maps or Maps.me) before departing for remote areas.

Packing Essentials for Safari
