Ngorongoro Crater: The Numbers Behind Africa's Most Extraordinary Caldera

A Geological Wonder
Approximately 2.5 million years ago, a massive volcano — likely as tall as Kilimanjaro — reached the end of its eruptive life and collapsed inward on itself, creating a caldera. The resulting structure is 19 km wide, 610 metres deep, and covers 264 square kilometres. It is the largest intact and unflooded volcanic caldera in the world. The crater walls act as a natural enclosure, trapping wildlife within and sustaining one of the most concentrated and permanent wildlife populations on earth.

The Black Rhino — A Last Refuge
The Ngorongoro Crater holds one of Africa's most accessible populations of black rhino — the world's most endangered rhinoceros species. Globally, fewer than 6,500 black rhinos remain. The crater's 30+ individuals represent a critically important sub-population under 24-hour protection. Sightings are more reliable here than almost anywhere else in Africa: the most productive areas are the Lerai Forest in the morning and the open Gorigor Swamp grasslands.
Lions: A Studied Population
The approximately 55 lions living within the crater represent one of the most intensively studied lion populations in the world. Uniquely, the crater's lions are effectively isolated — the steep walls and different habitat outside means that natural gene flow in and out of the crater is minimal. This isolation has been studied extensively and has led to conservation interventions that occasionally introduce new males from outside the crater to maintain genetic diversity.
The Elephant Bulls
The 300 elephants within the crater are unusual: they are overwhelmingly large adult males ('big tuskers') rather than family herds. Elephant families tend to move across wider ranges that take them out of the crater. The bulls, which are more solitary and territorial, remain. This makes Ngorongoro one of the best places in Africa to photograph extraordinarily large-tusked bull elephants against the backdrop of the caldera.
The UNESCO Dual Designation
In 1979, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site — and holds the rare dual status of both natural and cultural heritage, the only site in the world with this designation. The cultural recognition acknowledges the Maasai people who have lived within the NCA alongside wildlife for centuries, and the Olduvai Gorge, where 1.8-million-year-old hominid fossils were discovered by the Leakeys.
Conservation in Action: The 2024 Numbers
In 2024, the Warriors for Wildlife programme — which trains community members as wildlife monitors — managed nearly 500 human-elephant conflict incidents using non-lethal deterrents. Result: a 52% reduction in crop-raiding compared to 2023. The KopeLion project employed Ilchokuti (community guardians) who tracked GPS-collared lions daily and located 1,165 head of lost livestock, dramatically increasing community tolerance for predators.
When to Visit
The crater is worth visiting in every month of the year — wildlife density is consistently exceptional. The dry season (June–October) brings clearer skies and firmer crater floor tracks. January–March offers lush green landscapes and newborn animals. February brings large numbers of flamingos to Lake Magadi. The crater rim itself sits at 2,300m — bring warm layers for the early morning descent regardless of the month.
